Most Effective Thing We Can Give

Spreading Joy During the Holidays

Thanks for reading and leaving your helpful comments.

“It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations–something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own.”

- Katherine Patterson

Reading Tips

Returning to school can be exciting, stressful, or even scary for some children.  Start a new tradition in your family.  Write a letter to your child on their first day of school.  Offer encouragement, share special things about your child that make you proud, and save your letters to re-read at the end of each school year.

Create a reading contest with your family.  Set a goal for your children.  If they read so many books, they get a reward. Be creative! Rewards can be anything your child would get excited about.  Perhaps, it would be the next title in a series they are reading, going out for ice cream, or having a slumber party.

Encourage imagination – play games with your child while waiting in line.  Plan a vacation that they would like to take or a make believe birthday party.  Take turns making up a story.  Ask them what they would like to be when they grow up and why.  Talk about a friend or relative who you have not seen in a while.  Imagine what you would say to them.

After reading a book to your child, encourage thinking by asking them questions.  What words do they not understand?  Have them draw pictures of what happened in the story.  Does this remind them of anything or anyone?  Do they think that this could really happen?  Does this remind them of another story?

If your child is restless, suggest they draw pictures while you are reading.  Use toys, food, or pictures while reading to them.

Let your child think up a different ending.  Reading boosts their vocabulary.  Continue to read aloud to them even after they have learned to read for themselves.  Read from books that are above their reading level.

“A book is the most effective weapon against intolerance and ignorance.”  – quote from Lyndon Baines Johnson

An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest. ~ quote of Benjamin Franklin.

Reading is the simplest most effective thing that a parent can do to help their child.  And even more important for a special needs child.  Thank you, parents, for making that difference.

The Adventures of Katie Bubbles Book 1

As with the holidays, sometimes we receive gifts in the mail.  We love books.  They can’t get enough of them.  It was a very cute book.

The Adventures of Katie Bubbles Book 1

The Boston Adventure

by Steven Hill Jr and illustrated by his then 9 year old cousin Sydney Patricia Hill.

This is a cute adventure chapter book.  There are 17 short chapters with each chapter being about a couple of pages long.  It is a book that can be read to a class of 6 year olds or older.  You could help them read it to a younger sibling or read for themselves.   It is a story of the adventures of Giggles Bubbles and his sister Katie Bubbles.  It starts with Giggles trying out a science experiment in Katie’s pool.  Little did he know that Katie would be curious and climbed into the pool to find out what was in her pool.  Well, the rest you will have to read yourself to find out what happened during her adventures and how she helps some people on the way.  I don’t like when people give away the story.  I would much rather find out myself, wouldn’t you? It is a fast moving, fairly easy to read, funny story.  Get the book and read it. Your children will enjoy it.

In the back of the book are a list of words with definitions that children may not know.  So, they may learn some new words also.

Have a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year! Keep reading!

Spreading Joy during the Holidays

Wow!  It is December already.  Have you ordered your children’s selections?  Holidays are filled with all the fun things like decorating the tree, crafts, holiday songs, holiday food, and other great holiday stuff.  Making cookies.  Let your children read ingredients from holiday recipes while you bake together.  It’s a great way for them to practice reading.  They also can learn about measurements and temperatures at the same time.   Talk about colors that are seen during the holiday.  Read along words to songs.  One of the best ways to encourage a love of reading is to set aside time to share and read with your children every day.  Read everything they see, the road signs, the toy catalogs, the cook books, magazines, books of their choice and make some of them non-fictions.  Here are some great holiday songs.

“Few children learn to love books by themselves.  Someone has to lure them into the wonderful world of the written word; someone has to show them the way.”  – by Orville Prescott, “A Father Reads to His Children”

Christmas collections make great gifts for the holidays. Full of activity!

Tell a Friend and order by Dec 16 by 10:00AM CST to ensure it will get there by Dec 25th.

Happy Holidays!

Most Effective Thing We Can Give

“It’s not the toys in the house that make the difference in children’s lives; it’s  the words in their heads. The least expensive thing we can give a child outside of a hug turns out to be the most valuable: words.”  From Chapter One: Why read aloud?  The Read-Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease
